This book traces a Viennese childhood around 1900. Three sources are used for this - the childhood memories of Haenny Wintersteiner, née Adler, the picture book she wrote for her own children, The crying child, as well as a small selection of her poems, those that specifically address the parent-child relationship.
It is a double childhood - the childhood of a girl in the last decades of the 19th century and the processing of this childhood first as a young mother whose children were born shortly after the turn of the century and later as an old woman who remembers back. All this is framed and permeated by her grandson's memories of his grandmother.
